Sustainable industrial development: turning climate issues and environmental challenges into growth opportunities for the Italian and European territory.

The advanced course is organized as part of the NODES (Northwest Digital And Sustainable) - Spoke 2 project, whose specific objective is economic, social and territorial development through targeted actions.

In order to realize the objectives of the NODES project and support the growth and digital and ecological transition of business, the University of Insubria proposes an advanced course that aims to provide its students with the knowledge and tools necessary to deal with the new industrial scenarios related to the theme of sustainability in its different environmental, economic and social declinations.

The course is aimed at students of degree programs in the so-called STEM area and students of degree programs in the economic area. The topics covered by the teachings of the master's course are in fact of interest for the enrichment of the training of all professional figures prepared by these degree courses. The master's course is also open to personnel from companies who wish to learn more about sustainable industrial development.

Specifically, the course consists of three teachings

  1. Governance and management of corporate sustainability
  2. Environmental data measurement, monitoring and evaluation, environmental certification and accounting
  3. Innovation, circular economy and eco-design

The teachings are taught by experts from outside the University. Lectures are delivered face-to-face at the University of Insubria's science campus in Como, and outings to local companies are also planned to give students a firsthand view of sustainability issues.

The SCAI advanced course is specifically designed and organized as part of the NODES project. SCAI aims to promote the "One Planet, One Health" concept and to integrate the relationship between industry and education through the training of knowledgeable professionals capable of dealing with new industrial scenarios related to the issue of sustainability (clean and neutral industrial value chains, circular economy). To achieve this, lectures are taught by experts from outside the University. Face-to-face lectures are delivered at the scientific campus of the University of Insubria in Como, and outings to local companies are also planned to enable students to have a direct insight into sustainability issues.

Each SCAI teaching is aligned with the Spoke 2 mandate:

  • "Governance and Management of Corporate Sustainability" teaching will: understand relevant issues on the debate around corporate sustainability; understand how sustainability is changing the competitive landscape of business organizations; explore what policies and tools are enabling companies to meet sustainability challenges; and get a perspective from the "field" on how companies are integrating sustainability strategically and operationally.
  • The First Teaching Module "Innovation, Circular Economy and Eco-Design" addresses two of the most current opportunities for companies committed to sustainability: Circular Economy and Sustainability Reporting, presenting best practices and operational tools for both topics. The second module focuses on "Lean production," a business management methodology that aims to increase the value of a company's productivity by minimizing waste.
  • The First Module of the teaching "Measurement, Monitoring and Evaluation of Environmental Data, Environmental Certification and Accounting" provides basic knowledge of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, an established tool in many consumer goods sectors for assessing the potential environmental impacts of a product/service. The Module not only provides an opportunity to learn about the operational steps involved in conducting an LCA study (from defining the objective and purpose of the study to the stage of calculating impacts and interpreting the results), but also allows for an in-depth look at the opportunities to exploit the results, both as a scientific basis for corporate communication and to guide the company in designing new products/processes in order to minimize their environmental impact. The second module provides basic knowledge in relation to process and product certification in environmental issues.
