The workshop "The Challenge of Sustainability for the Built Environment" will offer experts, scholars and practitioners the topic of sustainable construction of living spaces for Humans by addressing from the origin the sustainability of raw materials, production processes, architectural and structural design, composition and insertion of Humans' habitat into the natural world, to the management of materials at the end of life.

The topic of materials for building will be addressed starting from the extraction activities of raw materials in a way that respects the planet's resources and ecosystems, analyzing the production process of cement and concrete according to the challenges to be faced for net neutrality in 2050, to define criteria and guidelines for the efficient structural design of a living context integrated with the natural world.

Perspectives that place building materials in the context of circular economy and environmental impact reduction will also be presented.

Through didactic testimonies of scholars and experts from different backgrounds (chemists, geologists, biologists, engineers, architects), the aim is to promote a vision of Man's habitat in a more attentive and balanced relationship with the living Planet, toward an approach, in analogy with what happens for example in the world of health, of the inclusive "One Life" type.

The workshop is sponsored by the Department for Sustainable Development and Eco Transition, in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano and Buzzi S.p.A., and is organized as part of Spoke 2 of NODES.

Sustainability of raw materials, production processes, "Net-Zero roadmap 2050," structural design, and sustainable construction are some of the topics that will be addressed during the morning by speakers.

The event, which is FREE, will award 3 CFPs and will take place on Monday, September 25, 2023 at the Crypt of Sant'Andrea, 116 Galileo Ferraris Street, Vercelli.
