Re4Circular
Development of Artificial Intelligence algorithms for the automatic classification of textile waste
Scheda del progetto
The transition of the fashion industry towards a more circular model is far from easy due to some issues in the used clothing supply chain. The innovation service required is to develop various Artificial Intelligence and logic algorithms that automate the process of classifying and sorting end-of-life garments, in order to direct them more easily towards the best form of circular recovery (reuse, upcycling, recycling, etc.).

To date, Artificial Intelligence for the automatic classification of garments is mainly used for commercial and marketing purposes. With this service, the start-up Atelier Riforma becomes the first to exploit AI to extract from a simple photograph of end-of-life garments the useful information to direct them towards recovery processes and thus valorise them in the circular economy.
By extracting and recording data on clothes, together with their image, Re4Circular will make it possible to digitalise waste and dematerialise the process (sorting and resale of used clothing). This will make a supply chain, which today has many critical issues, more efficient, short, sustainable and transparent.
The technology of Re4Circular is not meant to be used internally, but to be provided to all interested entities. The impact the project can generate is therefore potentially on a global scale. Re4Circular will allow the transmission, from the collector to the recycler/retailer, of all data concerning each garment, enabling a more efficient recovery of the garment.
