Infrastructure for urban monitoring and dynamic fleet management for TARIP deployment

TRUST focuses on the dynamic and environmentally sustainable management of the fleet of waste collection vehicles, urban monitoring and regulatory tools for incentive pricing for the application of TARIP (Punctual Waste Tariff). Unlike TARI (waste tax in Italy), TARIP relies on the direct participation of citizens, whose cooperation in reducing the amount of non-recyclable waste as much as possible is rewarded. By dynamically optimising collection routes, time, energy consumption and pollutant emissions are reduced. The vehicles also act as urban monitoring stations, providing data on air quality and road condition, which are acquired in real time via a LoRa communication infrastructure. In addition, a market analysis will be conducted for the industrialisation of the developed technological solution and the definition of new pricing models that favour the deployment of TARIP.

The challenge of the TRUST project lies in supporting the implementation of TARIP with technologies that enable reduced operating costs and environmental sustainability by transforming collection vehicles into mobile urban monitoring systems.
The proposed technological solution is innovative because of its ability to dynamically optimise collection routes on the basis of the number of bags actually delivered and the contextual conditions (e.g. traffic, road surface conditions, pollution, etc.), which can be detected using the collection vehicles themselves as monitoring stations.
The information on the bags actually delivered can be collected by using smart bags (equipped with RFID transponders or tags) and devices installed in each vehicle for mass reading and pre-processing of the tags.
The TRUST project offers significant benefits, allowing the implementation of TARIP with reduced operating costs and improved environmental sustainability.
Indirect benefits from the implementation of TARIP also include a reduction in the amount of non-recyclable waste and fairer pricing for taxpayers, calculated on the basis of the actual delivery of non-recyclable waste.
