ARBOREA is an innovative platform which, operating on the double track of social and territorial innovation, promotes the development and valorisation of innovative models for the management of mountain forest heritage, the related public services and the transformation of green infrastructures into a valorisation tool economical for the owners. ARBOREA, in fact, makes it possible to simplify the entry of small owners into the market for the voluntary exchange of carbon credits through the integrated management of the service cycle, from the analysis and quantification of the CO2 removed from a forest area to the management of the exchange between a landowner and a private company for emissions offset projects. In this way, the project aims to promote better management of forestry assets, reduce deforestation and implement a new model to analyze the value of a forest in an integrated way.

The challenge
Document

The project, and the future commercial platform, is based on the evolution of a research model that uses a cloud platform for the analysis and processing of data acquired from satellite sensors and proprietary artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms.

Why is it innovative
Document

applies modern data analytics technologies, such as big data, machine learning and cloud applications to the Earth observation sector, exploiting satellite data distributed with open source policy under the EU-funded Copernicus programme, and of the national IRIDE and COSMO-SKYMED programs to determine the quantity of CO2 removed from the atmosphere over time by a forest area or an urban green area starting from the estimate of the Above Ground Biomass (AGB).

Impact on users
Document

improves the management of territorial planning policies and increases knowledge of the risks associated with climate change, for example it improves understanding of the processes that govern forest fires, leading to the development of new fire prevention and management strategies. From an economic/technological point of view, the project contributes to: improving the efficiency and effectiveness of forest management, with consequent savings in time and costs; develop new forest valorization processes, creating new job and income opportunities for local communities and forestry companies. On a social/environmental level, the project contributes to reducing CO2 emissions, improving the quality of the environment and conserving biodiversity.
