The goal of the GAINS project is to develop and engineer a smart agriculture service that involves the application of predictive models to support wheat cultivation. These models will be designed to create a harmonized link between satellite data, mechanistic decision support models, sensors, and other auxiliary data (for example, from drones) in order to create a decision support platform that assists the user during cultivation and integrates - in an interoperable manner - with various existing technologies.

The challenge
Document

The challenge is to overcome certain technical and managerial issues that have so far limited the use and development of digital technologies capable of enhancing monitoring, management, and automation in the agribusiness sector.

Why is it innovative
Document

GAINS aims to acquire skills and knowledge to create, develop, and engineer an intelligent agriculture service that includes: a) the creation and validation of adaptive predictive models to support wheat cultivation (i.e., capable of dynamically collecting inputs), thus overcoming the paradigm of mechanistic DSS (Decision Support Software) models based on deterministic equations describing a biological or agronomic phenomenon; b) automating the data-entry operations currently managed by the user.

Impact on the users
Document

GAINS will provide farmers with advanced support for a more "intelligent" management of cultivation aimed at saving on costs and environmental management with a focus on minimizing production inputs; achieving high quality of the harvested wheat thanks to intelligent and precise support regarding strategic decisions; and better organizing and forecasting the market through simulation systems on quantity and quality of productions.
