The exploitation of organic materials, primarily intended as by-products/co-products of agro-food chains and vegetable waste, is a key target of research in the field of eco-sciences. VALO.RE.BIO is a project that aims at the application of circular economy models, such as biorefineries integrated with local agricultural supply chains, able to recover and give high added value to the ingredients contained in production by-products. The project idea stems from the need to combine innovative technologies for the production of functional ingredients for different markets (cosmetic, medical devices, nutraceutical-food) with the development of digital processes that can implement production processes in an 'intelligent' way, as well as allow their timely monitoring.

Although many applied scientific studies on the valorisation of waste matrices and their conversion are available, the application of digital techniques for process monitoring, data collection (and utilisation), product design and the setting of predictive models (research lines covered by this project) are partially - and individually - exploited.
The innovation lies in assembling one or more green technologies with a low environmental impact for the valorisation of certain waste vegetable matrices from the agri-food sectors and the production of bioactive ingredients/molecules. This will be coupled with digital technologies for monitoring and data collection also for possible LCA analysis. This will result in an understanding of the real utility of the selected processes and possible industrial scalability.
The VOLO.RE.BIO project will make it possible to follow an LCA approach that will carefully evaluate the best technologies in terms of effectiveness and low environmental impact, ensuring secure feedback to the companies involved in terms of the availability of new processes/products to expand the company portfolio. In addition, the supply chain will have the opportunity to re-use materials that are normally discarded or under-utilised. Customers will have new sustainable and supply chain-traced ingredients in the various markets.
