Rearing of H. illucens larvae on agro-food by-products for feeding laying hens; subsequent production and marketing of “circular” eggs and derived products

Scheda del progetto
The "Circular Egg" project aims to exploit the larvae of the black soldier fly as a sustainable protein source for feeding laying hens.
It aims to enhance the sustainability characteristics of this new form of breeding, strongly supported by the FAO and the European Union for the beneficial nutritional properties of insects.
The breeding of larvae occurs through the use of agri-food by-products, transforming what would otherwise be considered waste into a precious resource. This type of farming promotes a circular economy process, producing sustainable and responsible eggs and derivatives.

The project aims to increase consumer awareness, through the traceability of all the steps that led to the final product purchased, and of the agricultural entrepreneur, through the proposal of a healthy and sustainable alternative to traditional feed. At the same time, the project aims to promote the production and marketing of egg products derived from a controlled, sustainable and local supply chain.
The project develops an innovative process that reduces waste, food waste and emissions, introducing healthy, sustainable and high-quality certified products to the market.
Thanks to the implementation of the project, many poultry farmers will be able to reduce the use and therefore the cost (economic and environmental) associated with the supply of traditional feed. Furthermore, products with increased qualitative and commercial value will be obtained, since they are associated with a circular economy system and a traceable and certain territorial supply chain.
